Surfing in Ireland in January

Surfing in Ireland in January

January gives Ireland more swell than it can use and the wind to go with it: the month is spent looking for shelter rather than for waves.

Conditions in January

  • Water temp. : 8 °C
  • Wetsuit : 5/4 mm, hood, gloves and boots

January is the middle of the Atlantic storm season, and on this coast that means the ocean is never the problem. Something arrives every few days, usually more than anybody needs.

What a January week is actually made of is driving. The west coast runs from Donegal down to Clare with headlands, bays and islands facing every direction between north-west and south-west, so a wind that ruins one stretch leaves another clean. Bundoran sits inside Donegal Bay and wants a south-easterly; Lahinch, two hours south, faces straight out and wants a north-easterly. Knowing which of the two the day belongs to is the whole skill, and it is why people here surf with somebody local even when they can already surf.

The water is at 8°C, two degrees off Iceland in the same week. A 5/4 with hood, boots and gloves, and even then the session ends on temperature rather than on tiredness.

Learning in January

  • For learning : Off season

No. Cold, powerful, and the rips that come with a big January swell are the reason the sheltered bays exist.

Where a beginner goes in January

These spots are reachable all year. What the month changes is the size of the waves, not the access.

For an experienced surfer

  • Surf : Very good

Endless swell and an empty coast, for anybody who will drive two hours on a forecast and be happy about it.

Where these figures come from

Air, rain and sunshine: WMO / NOAA 1991-2020 normals for Agadir Al Massira, a station some twenty kilometres inland and so a little warmer than the coast in summer. Swell, period and share of workable wind: Swell Archive and surf-forecast. Water temperature: seatemperature.org and weather-and-climate. Crowds and prices are an editorial judgement, not a measurement.
