Conditions in August

  • Water temp. : 17 °C
  • Wetsuit : 3/2 mm, 4/3 mm for long sessions

August is the top of the temperature curve and the bottom of nothing. The sea peaks at 17°C, which is nine degrees above February and still cold enough that a 4/3 is not optional, and the summer pattern of small, frequent, undemanding waves carries on through most of the month.

What makes August worth watching is its last two weeks. The North Atlantic starts producing again before the summer ends on land, so the final days of the month can deliver a proper swell onto water that is still at its annual maximum and beaches that are still warm. That overlap is short and it is the best combination Ireland offers all year, for anybody able to move their dates late.

It is also the busiest month on the coast, which in Ireland means the car park at Lahinch is full and the line-up has fifteen people in it.

Learning in August

  • For learning : Very good

Warm by local standards, small, and every school running. If a first Irish week has to happen, it happens now or in July.

Where a beginner goes in August

These spots are reachable all year. What the month changes is the size of the waves, not the access.

For an experienced surfer

  • Surf : Good

Wait for the end of it. The last week of August on an early autumn swell is the closest this coast comes to easy.

Where these figures come from

Air, rain and sunshine: WMO / NOAA 1991-2020 normals for Agadir Al Massira, a station some twenty kilometres inland and so a little warmer than the coast in summer. Swell, period and share of workable wind: Swell Archive and surf-forecast. Water temperature: seatemperature.org and weather-and-climate. Crowds and prices are an editorial judgement, not a measurement.
