September is where the country page's answer sits. The North Atlantic lows return, the swell is properly back, and the sea is still at 15°C because it takes until October to give up what August put into it. Real waves on water that has not turned yet is the combination anybody planning a first serious Irish trip should be looking for.
The wind is the difference between this month and April. There is more of it and it is less often from the east, so the proportion of clean days falls even as the number of surfable days rises. September delivers more, and asks you to accept that a bigger share of it will be ragged.
The coast empties on the first of the month and the light is still generous, sunset past eight for the first half of it. Between the temperature, the swell and the space, this is the month with the fewest compromises in it.
