May holds on to the spring pattern. The highs still build, the easterly mornings still happen, and the swell has come down to a size that suits somebody improving rather than somebody surviving.
The light is what May adds. This far north the days stretch fast, and by the end of the month there is surfable light from six in the morning until nine at night. On a coast where the whole game is being at the right beach when the wind is right, fifteen hours of daylight is not a comfort, it is a second and a third chance at the same day.
The water reaches 12°C, the gloves go away, and nobody else is here: the schools are opening but the summer has not arrived, and the coast between Sligo and Clare is as quiet as it gets.
