Surfing in Portugal in December

Surfing in Portugal in December

December starts the Portuguese winter: waves every day, the weather deciding which of them you get, and 15°C water.

  • Water temp.
    15 °C
  • The month
    Very good

Conditions in December

  • Water temp. : 15 °C
  • Wetsuit : 4/3 mm, boots advised

December is the return to non-stop swell and unreliable conditions. The Atlantic lows are producing constantly, so there is something breaking on every day of the month, and the wind and rain that come with them decide how much of it is surfable.

The water is down to 15°C and a 4/3 with boots is the sensible kit. Nazaré is at the heart of its big-wave season and draws a crowd to watch rather than to surf. Everywhere else the trick is the same as January's: a car, a week, and the flexibility to be at whichever bay is holding shape that morning.

Learning in December

Hard, and busier than you would expect over the holidays. The sheltered side of Baleal is the only realistic answer.

Where a beginner goes in December

These spots are reachable all year. What the month changes is the size of the waves, not the access.

For an experienced surfer

  • Surf : Very good

Winter swell arriving. Read the forecast the night before, and take the sheltered option when the west is closing out.

Where these figures come from

Air, rain and sunshine: WMO / NOAA 1991-2020 normals for Agadir Al Massira, a station some twenty kilometres inland and so a little warmer than the coast in summer. Swell, period and share of workable wind: Swell Archive and surf-forecast. Water temperature: seatemperature.org and weather-and-climate. Crowds and prices are an editorial judgement, not a measurement.
