Surfing in Portugal in September

Surfing in Portugal in September

September is the best month to surf in Portugal: the nortada fades, the Atlantic swells return, the water is at its 18°C peak and the crowds have gone.

    Excellent

Conditions in September

  • Water temp. : 18 °C
  • Wetsuit : 3/2 mm, 4/3 mm for long sessions

September is the month everything lines up, which is why it is named ahead of the rest of the year. The nortada dies off through the month, so the offshores come back and a west coast afternoon becomes usable again. The first proper Atlantic groundswells of the autumn arrive at the same time. And the European holidays end in the first week, so the beaches empty.

None of those three would be enough alone. Together they give the swell of the winter half on the water temperature of the summer half with nobody on it. The sea is at 18°C, its yearly high, and a 3/2 covers a long session. Peniche, Ericeira and the Algarve are all in play.

Learning in September

Still very good. The swell is building rather than built, and the schools have space again after the August rush.

Where a beginner goes in September

These spots are reachable all year. What the month changes is the size of the waves, not the access.

For an experienced surfer

  • Surf : Excellent

If you take one week in Portugal, take this one. Everything the coast can do, it does in September.

Where these figures come from

Air, rain and sunshine: WMO / NOAA 1991-2020 normals for Agadir Al Massira, a station some twenty kilometres inland and so a little warmer than the coast in summer. Swell, period and share of workable wind: Swell Archive and surf-forecast. Water temperature: seatemperature.org and weather-and-climate. Crowds and prices are an editorial judgement, not a measurement.
