April is where the two engines hand over. The dry season is ending, so the trades that groomed the last four months start losing their grip, and the Southern Hemisphere storms that will run the coast until October begin sending the first pulses north.
Neither is fully in charge, which is what makes April a middling month and a good one to arrive in with no expectations. Mornings are usually still clean, the swell is small and forgiving, and by the last week of the month a proper south-west swell can show up and change the week. The water is at 29°C. The rain starts returning inland before it reaches the coast.
