June is where the season gets serious. The Southern Ocean storms are at their most productive and the swell reaching the Pacific coast is both larger and more frequent than in May. It is the first of the three best months of the year, and they run back to back.

The wind stays out of it. Green-season mornings are light and variable, which on a coast with real groundswell means glass rather than a two hour offshore window, and it is why people who have surfed here before plan around June to August rather than around the dry weather. Rain arrives in the afternoon and it arrives most days. The water is at 29°C, and every session is boardshorts.

Learning in June

Getting demanding. The beach breaks around Nosara and Santa Teresa still work at every size, but this is no longer a month where the sea forgives a bad decision.

Where a beginner goes in June

These spots are reachable all year. What the month changes is the size of the waves, not the access.

For an experienced surfer

  • Surf : Excellent

The season proper. Consistent, warm and glassy, and the crowds are still lighter than they will be in July and August.

Where these figures come from

Air, rain and sunshine: WMO / NOAA 1991-2020 normals for Agadir Al Massira, a station some twenty kilometres inland and so a little warmer than the coast in summer. Swell, period and share of workable wind: Swell Archive and surf-forecast. Water temperature: seatemperature.org and weather-and-climate. Crowds and prices are an editorial judgement, not a measurement.
