May is when the Southern Hemisphere takes over. The swells that have been occasional since April start arriving consistently on the Pacific coast, and the trade winds step back at the same time, which is the part people underestimate. Instead of an offshore that has to be caught before it turns, the green season gives light and variable mornings that stay glassy for hours.
That combination, real swell and no wind pushing you off the water, is what makes May to October the season here rather than just the swell doing it alone. Rain comes in the afternoon and evening rather than the morning. The water is at 30°C, the warmest of the year.
