Surfing in Costa Rica in September

Surfing in Costa Rica in September

September keeps Costa Rica's south-west swell running, and pays for it with the wettest weather of the year.

  • Water temp.
    29 °C
  • The month
    Very good

Conditions in September

  • Water temp. : 29 °C
  • Wetsuit : Shorty or 2 mm

September is the swell of August with the sky of the green season at its worst. The Southern Hemisphere is still sending groundswell and the Pacific coast is still getting it, so the surf holds up. What changes is everything on land: this is the wettest stretch of the Costa Rican year, roads on the Nicoya get harder, and storms can turn a clean morning into a grey week.

That is what puts September a notch below June, July and August, despite the swell. The compensation is real: it is the quietest month of the season by a distance, prices drop, and empty peaks are normal. The water is at 29°C and the rain is warm.

Learning in September

Workable if you accept the weather. The waves are no bigger than August and there are far fewer people watching you.

Where a beginner goes in September

These spots are reachable all year. What the month changes is the size of the waves, not the access.

For an experienced surfer

  • Surf : Very good

Full season swell with nobody on it. Bring wet-weather patience and a plan for the afternoons.

Where these figures come from

Air, rain and sunshine: WMO / NOAA 1991-2020 normals for Agadir Al Massira, a station some twenty kilometres inland and so a little warmer than the coast in summer. Swell, period and share of workable wind: Swell Archive and surf-forecast. Water temperature: seatemperature.org and weather-and-climate. Crowds and prices are an editorial judgement, not a measurement.
