January is the middle of the dry season on the Pacific coast. The Southern Hemisphere swell that ran from April to October has stopped, so what arrives is smaller and comes mostly from the north. The north-east trades make up for it: they blow offshore across the Nicoya peninsula almost daily, and a small wave held open by wind beats a bigger one falling over itself.

Tamarindo, Playa Grande and Nosara are the names that come up for exactly this reason: one of the good months of the year, without being the best. It is also the driest stretch of the year and the busiest, since the weather brings everybody else too. The water is at 28°C and boardshorts are the whole kit.

Learning in January

One of the two best months to learn here. Small, warm, groomed by the wind, and every beach on the Nicoya has a school on it.

Where a beginner goes in January

These spots are reachable all year. What the month changes is the size of the waves, not the access.

For an experienced surfer

  • Surf : Very good

Clean rather than big. If you want size you are in the wrong half of the year, and June to August is where to look.

Where these figures come from

Air, rain and sunshine: WMO / NOAA 1991-2020 normals for Agadir Al Massira, a station some twenty kilometres inland and so a little warmer than the coast in summer. Swell, period and share of workable wind: Swell Archive and surf-forecast. Water temperature: seatemperature.org and weather-and-climate. Crowds and prices are an editorial judgement, not a measurement.
