Conditions in May

May is where the season is properly on. The Southern Hemisphere storms are producing and the swell reaches the Tola coast as four to eight foot faces, consistently rather than in pulses. The reefs at Popoyo, Colorados and Playgrounds are all working, and the outer reef at Popoyo is doing what it is famous for.

The lake wind is the reason this reads better than the same swell would elsewhere. Groundswell of that size on a coast that is offshore most of the time is an unusual combination, and it is the whole argument for Nicaragua over its neighbours. The rain has started and it comes in the afternoon. The water is at 29°C, the year's warmest.

Learning in May

It has become a real ocean. Stay on the beaches around San Juan del Sur, with a guide, and treat the Tola reefs as something to watch.

Where a beginner goes in May

These spots are reachable all year. What the month changes is the size of the waves, not the access.

For an experienced surfer

  • Surf : Excellent

The season without the crowd. May, and to a lesser extent September, are the two months that give season swell with the beaches still quiet.

Where these figures come from

Air, rain and sunshine: WMO / NOAA 1991-2020 normals for Agadir Al Massira, a station some twenty kilometres inland and so a little warmer than the coast in summer. Swell, period and share of workable wind: Swell Archive and surf-forecast. Water temperature: seatemperature.org and weather-and-climate. Crowds and prices are an editorial judgement, not a measurement.
