Conditions in January

  • Water temp. : 13 °C
  • Wetsuit : 4/3 mm, boots advised

January is the middle of the northern Spanish season. The North Atlantic lows are lined up, the swell arrives from the north-west, and the estuary at Mundaka is doing what nothing else in Europe does: peeling a long left along a sandbar a river built.

The month is also a lesson in reading a forecast rather than a calendar. January at Mundaka gives roughly eleven clean days out of thirty, thirteen blown out and seven too small, so half the month is unusable and you do not know which half until four days out. A week booked in January is a bet; two weeks is a plan.

The water is at 13°C and the wave is the hardest and busiest in Spain. Everything that makes it famous, the length, the speed, the sandbar, also makes it unforgiving at a river mouth on an outgoing tide.

Learning in January

  • For learning : Off season

No. The famous wave is out of the question and the beaches beside it are taking the same winter swell.

Where a beginner goes in January

These spots are reachable all year. What the month changes is the size of the waves, not the access.

For an experienced surfer

  • Surf : Excellent

The month the trip is for, if you can move your days around a forecast. Bring a step-up and expect company on every set.

Where these figures come from

Air, rain and sunshine: WMO / NOAA 1991-2020 normals for Agadir Al Massira, a station some twenty kilometres inland and so a little warmer than the coast in summer. Swell, period and share of workable wind: Swell Archive and surf-forecast. Water temperature: seatemperature.org and weather-and-climate. Crowds and prices are an editorial judgement, not a measurement.
