Surfing in Spain in May

Surfing in Spain in May

May is where Zarautz takes over from Mundaka: small, warm enough, and the beginning of the learning season.

Conditions in May

  • Water temp. : 16 °C
  • Wetsuit : 4/3 mm, boots advised

May turns the country around. The swell that made the winter is gone, and what is left is a two-and-a-half kilometre beach at Zarautz doing the job it does for most of the Basque Country, which is teaching it to surf.

The switch is worth understanding rather than regretting. A north-facing coast in May gets small, tidy waves out of what is left of the North Atlantic, and small tidy waves on sand with a town behind them is the best thing that can happen to somebody in their first week. The famous left forty minutes west has nothing to offer until September.

The water reaches 16°C, the schools are running, and the beach is not yet the beach it becomes in August.

Learning in May

  • For learning : Very good

The month to come. Warm enough for a 3/2, small enough to stand up in, and the instructor is not sharing you with a queue.

Where a beginner goes in May

These spots are reachable all year. What the month changes is the size of the waves, not the access.

For an experienced surfer

  • Surf : Good

Thin. Take a longboard, take the mornings, and treat the rest of the week as a trip to San Sebastián that happens to have a beach.

Where these figures come from

Air, rain and sunshine: WMO / NOAA 1991-2020 normals for Agadir Al Massira, a station some twenty kilometres inland and so a little warmer than the coast in summer. Swell, period and share of workable wind: Swell Archive and surf-forecast. Water temperature: seatemperature.org and weather-and-climate. Crowds and prices are an editorial judgement, not a measurement.
