Surfing in Spain in August

August is the warmest water and the smallest surf of the Spanish year, on a coast that spends the month being a holiday rather than a surf trip.

Conditions in August

  • Water temp. : 23 °C
  • Wetsuit : Shorty or 2 mm

August repeats July with more people on it. Spain takes its holidays this month and the northern coast is where the rest of the country goes to escape forty degrees inland, so Zarautz's two and a half kilometres of sand fill up and San Sebastián books out.

The middle of the month is worth knowing about before choosing dates. Semana Grande fills San Sebastián for a week in mid-August, with fireworks fired from the bay every night and the old town shoulder to shoulder until morning. Whether that is the reason to come or the reason to come a fortnight later is a real question, and it decides more about the week than the forecast does.

The water is at 23°C, the warmest it gets, and the wetsuit spends the week in the car.

Learning in August

  • For learning : Excellent

Warm, small and forgiving, with the whole coast set up to teach. The trade is the crowd on the beach and what a bed costs in August.

Where a beginner goes in August

These spots are reachable all year. What the month changes is the size of the waves, not the access.

For an experienced surfer

  • Surf : Off season

The month to be somewhere else, unless somebody else chose the dates. A dawn longboard session, and then the day belongs to the town.

Where these figures come from

Air, rain and sunshine: WMO / NOAA 1991-2020 normals for Agadir Al Massira, a station some twenty kilometres inland and so a little warmer than the coast in summer. Swell, period and share of workable wind: Swell Archive and surf-forecast. Water temperature: seatemperature.org and weather-and-climate. Crowds and prices are an editorial judgement, not a measurement.
