May is the first month of the useful season. The rains have gone, the sky is dry and stable for the next five months, and the low-pressure systems in the far south are producing swell with enough size to reach this far north with something left.
What changes at Tofo is the point rather than the beach. Tofinho, the right at the southern end, needs a proper south-east swell to work and spends the summer waiting for one; from May it starts getting them. The beach in front of the village keeps doing what it does all year, which is offering something small and forgiving most days.
The water has come down to 26°C and will keep sliding to a low of 24° in August. Across the entire year it moves less than five degrees, so the calendar here never involves a wetsuit decision.
