Surfing in Mozambique in October

Surfing in Mozambique in October

October is the emptiest month on an already empty coast, with the swell fading and everything else at its best.

Conditions in October

  • Water temp. : 25 °C
  • Wetsuit : Shorty or 2 mm

October ends the season properly. The southern systems weaken, the gaps between swells stretch out, and Tofinho goes back to waiting.

Nothing else has turned yet. The rains do not start until November, the water is climbing again through 25°C, and the village is between seasons in every sense: the southern-winter surfers have gone home and the South African holidays are two months away. If the question is when to have this stretch of coast to yourself, the answer is now.

What that means in practice is a week built on the assumption that some days will be flat. Which is the same advice this coast gives in every month, just with the proportion moved: October is a diving week with surf in it rather than a surfing week with diving in it.

Learning in October

  • For learning : Very good

A good month to learn, with warm water, small waves and space on the beach. The weather is still dry for another few weeks.

Where a beginner goes in October

These spots are reachable all year. What the month changes is the size of the waves, not the access.

For an experienced surfer

  • Surf : Good

Fading swell and nobody to share what is left with. Not a month to fly for unless something shows on the chart.

Where these figures come from

Air, rain and sunshine: WMO / NOAA 1991-2020 normals for Agadir Al Massira, a station some twenty kilometres inland and so a little warmer than the coast in summer. Swell, period and share of workable wind: Swell Archive and surf-forecast. Water temperature: seatemperature.org and weather-and-climate. Crowds and prices are an editorial judgement, not a measurement.
