Conditions in March

  • Water temp. : 28 °C
  • Wetsuit : Shorty or 2 mm

March is the turn. The rains ease through the month, the cyclone risk drops off after the first fortnight, and the Southern Ocean begins to wake up: the first swells with any size behind them start arriving from the far south.

They arrive filtered, which is the permanent condition here. Every swell that reaches Tofo has had to get past Madagascar, sixteen hundred kilometres of island lying across the window, and what makes it through has either squeezed up the channel or come round the top having lost most of its energy. March is when there is finally enough being generated for a useful amount to survive that.

The water is still at 28°C and the village is quiet again: the South African holidays are over and the season has not started.

Learning in March

  • For learning : Good

Warm, small and empty, with the weather improving every week. The best of the summer months for a first trip.

Where a beginner goes in March

These spots are reachable all year. What the month changes is the size of the waves, not the access.

For an experienced surfer

  • Surf : Good

The first swells worth checking, on a coast with nobody on it. Not the month to fly for, and a good month to already be here.

Where these figures come from

Air, rain and sunshine: WMO / NOAA 1991-2020 normals for Agadir Al Massira, a station some twenty kilometres inland and so a little warmer than the coast in summer. Swell, period and share of workable wind: Swell Archive and surf-forecast. Water temperature: seatemperature.org and weather-and-climate. Crowds and prices are an editorial judgement, not a measurement.
