Conditions in April

  • Water temp. : 27 °C
  • Wetsuit : Shorty or 2 mm

April is the month the sources put a number on, and both Tofo breaks return the same one: eleven clean days out of thirty, seven blown out and twelve too small. That the beach and the point four hundred metres away report identical figures tells you they are reading one cell of a forecast grid rather than two waves, so treat it as a description of this stretch of coast rather than of either break.

The number worth stopping on is the twelve. On most coasts the days you lose go to wind; here the largest single share goes to swell that never showed up, which is Madagascar's shadow written as a fraction of your week. Eleven clean days out of thirty means a seven-day trip should expect two or three that work.

That is not a reason to stay away, but it is a reason to know what else is here. Tofo runs on diving as much as surfing, and a flat April day is a whale shark day rather than a wasted one.

Learning in April

  • For learning : Very good

A good month to arrive. The water is at 27°C, Praia Tofo is sand and gentle, and a school will find you something on most days.

Where a beginner goes in April

These spots are reachable all year. What the month changes is the size of the waves, not the access.

For an experienced surfer

  • Surf : Very good

Two or three good days in a week, and nobody on them. Bring a board that works when it is small.

Where these figures come from

Air, rain and sunshine: WMO / NOAA 1991-2020 normals for Agadir Al Massira, a station some twenty kilometres inland and so a little warmer than the coast in summer. Swell, period and share of workable wind: Swell Archive and surf-forecast. Water temperature: seatemperature.org and weather-and-climate. Crowds and prices are an editorial judgement, not a measurement.
