Conditions in September

  • Water temp. : 24 °C
  • Wetsuit : Shorty or 2 mm

September closes the southern winter. The swell is still arriving and beginning to space out, the dry season holds, and the water starts back up from its 24° low.

What makes it the best month to travel rather than the best month for waves is everything around the surf. The weather is settled, the road from Maputo is dry, the village is between the two South African holiday waves, and the humpbacks that pass this coast on their migration are still around into the month. Tofo's reefs carry manta rays and whale sharks the whole year, so a flat day here has more to do than a flat day almost anywhere, and September is when the flat days are pleasant rather than wet.

The swell is a grade below June and July, which for most people is the right grade.

Learning in September

  • For learning : Very good

The best month of the year to come here for a first week. Warm, dry, quiet, and the beach is manageable again.

Where a beginner goes in September

These spots are reachable all year. What the month changes is the size of the waves, not the access.

For an experienced surfer

  • Surf : Very good

Season swell easing into something friendlier, with the whole coast still empty. Take it if June's size is more than you want.

Where these figures come from

Air, rain and sunshine: WMO / NOAA 1991-2020 normals for Agadir Al Massira, a station some twenty kilometres inland and so a little warmer than the coast in summer. Swell, period and share of workable wind: Swell Archive and surf-forecast. Water temperature: seatemperature.org and weather-and-climate. Crowds and prices are an editorial judgement, not a measurement.
