Surfing in the Canary Islands in May

Surfing in the Canary Islands in May

May is a beginner month in the Canaries: the swell is small and short-period, the water reaches 20°C, and the trade winds are not yet blowing all day.

Conditions in May

  • Water temp. : 20 °C
  • Wetsuit : 3/2 mm fullsuit

The north-west groundswell has largely gone by May, and what reaches the islands rarely carries twelve seconds. That keeps the north shore reefs asleep and leaves the thirty kilometres of sand between Corralejo and El Cotillo doing the work, which is exactly what a first week needs: a bottom that does not punish, and waves that are small because of the season rather than because you picked a bad day.

The alisios are still building. Expect a clean morning and a breeze that arrives some time after eleven, so lessons run early and the afternoon goes to the beach. The water is at 20°C and a 3/2 covers it.

Learning in May

The month schools sell, and rightly. Sand bottom, small swell, warm water and a whole coast to spread out on.

Where a beginner goes in May

These spots are reachable all year. What the month changes is the size of the waves, not the access.

For an experienced surfer

  • Surf : Good

Not the point of coming here. If you are travelling for waves, the Canaries are an October to March destination and everybody local will tell you so.

Where these figures come from

Air, rain and sunshine: WMO / NOAA 1991-2020 normals for Agadir Al Massira, a station some twenty kilometres inland and so a little warmer than the coast in summer. Swell, period and share of workable wind: Swell Archive and surf-forecast. Water temperature: seatemperature.org and weather-and-climate. Crowds and prices are an editorial judgement, not a measurement.
