April is where the two mechanisms swap over. The Atlantic lows that fed the reefs all winter track further north, so the days carrying twelve seconds of period become the exception rather than the rule, and the north shore reefs go quiet between swells.
At the same time the alisios begin to fill in, first as an afternoon breeze and by June as a permanent fixture. In April that means a session is a morning session, and a morning that starts glassy can be side-onshore by noon. The water has turned and sits at 19°C, warmer than February. What April really offers is the beach breaks: sand, small, uncrowded, and long enough to spend three hours on.
