Surfing in the Canary Islands in February

Surfing in the Canary Islands in February

February is the best month of the Canary year: January's swell without January's crowd, and the coldest water is still 18°C.

Conditions in February

  • Water temp. : 18 °C
  • Wetsuit : 3/2 mm, 4/3 mm for long sessions

February keeps the north-west groundswell running at about twenty-five days out of thirty, and the European holidays that filled the islands in December and January are over. The car parks stay quiet through February and March, on the same reefs that had a queue six weeks earlier.

The water is at 18°C, the low point of the year here, which means a 3/2 and a 4/3 if you plan on staying out three hours. That is the whole cost. There are no trade winds until June, so a day that starts glassy usually stays that way, and the north shore reefs from El Cotillo up to Rocky Point and The Bubble are getting the period they need. Booties are worth packing: that reef is shallow lava and it does not forgive a foot down.

Learning in February

The beach breaks between Corralejo and El Cotillo are the place, and they are quieter now than at any point since October.

Where a beginner goes in February

These spots are reachable all year. What the month changes is the size of the waves, not the access.

For an experienced surfer

  • Surf : Excellent

Full season swell and nobody on it. If you make one trip to the Canaries a year, this is the month.

Where these figures come from

Air, rain and sunshine: WMO / NOAA 1991-2020 normals for Agadir Al Massira, a station some twenty kilometres inland and so a little warmer than the coast in summer. Swell, period and share of workable wind: Swell Archive and surf-forecast. Water temperature: seatemperature.org and weather-and-climate. Crowds and prices are an editorial judgement, not a measurement.
