Surfing in the Canary Islands in June

Surfing in the Canary Islands in June

June is when the trade winds take over the Canaries: 15 to 25 knots from the north-north-east, almost every day, and surfing becomes a morning activity.

From June the alisios blow without much of a break until September. They come from the north-north-east at 15 to 25 knots, which is side-onshore on the north shores, and they are the reason these islands are one of Europe's best kite and wing destinations in summer and one of its more frustrating surf ones.

The practical effect is a clock. The sea is usually clean at first light and chopped up by late morning, so a June week is six early starts and six afternoons doing something else. What swell there is comes short-period, which keeps the reefs off and the sand working. The water is at 21°C, warm enough to leave the 3/2 in the bag on a long morning.

Learning in June

Fine, on the morning shift. The beach breaks are small and the water is warm, and a school will have you in by eight for a reason.

Where a beginner goes in June

These spots are reachable all year. What the month changes is the size of the waves, not the access.

For an experienced surfer

  • Surf : Good

Bring a kite or accept the schedule. There is surf in June and it is over by eleven.

Where these figures come from

Air, rain and sunshine: WMO / NOAA 1991-2020 normals for Agadir Al Massira, a station some twenty kilometres inland and so a little warmer than the coast in summer. Swell, period and share of workable wind: Swell Archive and surf-forecast. Water temperature: seatemperature.org and weather-and-climate. Crowds and prices are an editorial judgement, not a measurement.
