Surfing in Wales in December

Surfing in Wales in December

December has swell every weekend and eight hours of daylight to spend it in, and the only people who make that work live nearby.

Conditions in December

  • Wetsuit : 5/4 mm, hood, gloves and boots

December is not short of waves. The Atlantic is producing continuously, something reaches the Gower most weekends, and the west end can be as good in December as at any point in the year.

The constraint is everything around it. The sun is up from quarter past eight until four, the water is at 10°C, and the wind is as likely to be wrong as right. A weekend built on a three-hour drive has to get the beach, the tide, the wind and the light to agree inside a single short day, and often two of the four are enough to send you home.

Which is why the honest description of December here is the one the country page already gives about the whole coast: this is a place you go to because you can go on Saturday and be back on Sunday. Nobody flies for a Welsh December. The people who get the good days are the ones for whom a wasted trip costs a tank of petrol rather than a holiday.

No.

Where a beginner goes in December

These spots are reachable all year. What the month changes is the size of the waves, not the access.

For an experienced surfer

  • Surf : Very good

Real swell inside a short day. Worth it if you are within an hour or two; not worth building a week around.

Where these figures come from

Air, rain and sunshine: WMO / NOAA 1991-2020 normals for Agadir Al Massira, a station some twenty kilometres inland and so a little warmer than the coast in summer. Swell, period and share of workable wind: Swell Archive and surf-forecast. Water temperature: seatemperature.org and weather-and-climate. Crowds and prices are an editorial judgement, not a measurement.
