Surfing in Wales in January

January is Langland's month, which on this coast means the sheltered side of the peninsula is the only side working, and everybody knows it.

Conditions in January

  • Water temp. : 8 °C
  • Wetsuit : 5/4 mm, hood, gloves and boots

January brings the most swell of the Welsh year and the most wind with it. The Atlantic lows come through one after another, and on the majority of days the open west end of the Gower is too big, too messy or both.

That is when the south side earns its keep. Langland Bay faces south and wants a northerly, so the wind coming off the land in a cold January snap is the wind it has been waiting for. Its best month is this one, at two clean days out of thirty, and those two days are worth the drive precisely because they are the only two on the peninsula.

The crowd follows the same logic. A south-facing bay with a northerly offshore is often the only thing breaking properly in south Wales, so the car park fills and the line-up with it. The water is at 8°C: 4/3, boots and a hood, and the session ends when your hands do.

Learning in January

  • For learning : Off season

No. What works in January works because it is sheltered, not because it is gentle, and there will be twenty people on it.

Where a beginner goes in January

These spots are reachable all year. What the month changes is the size of the waves, not the access.

For an experienced surfer

  • Surf : Very good

Watch the chart on Thursday and go on Saturday. Two good days in the month, and no way to know in advance which two.

Where these figures come from

Air, rain and sunshine: WMO / NOAA 1991-2020 normals for Agadir Al Massira, a station some twenty kilometres inland and so a little warmer than the coast in summer. Swell, period and share of workable wind: Swell Archive and surf-forecast. Water temperature: seatemperature.org and weather-and-climate. Crowds and prices are an editorial judgement, not a measurement.
