Surfing in Wales in October

Surfing in Wales in October

October is the month both sides of the Gower are live at once, which is the whole reason the peninsula is worth the drive.

October is the best weekend of the Welsh year, and the reason is the shape of the land rather than the size of the swell.

Llangennith faces west and wants a westerly swell with an easterly wind. Langland, twenty minutes south, wants a south-westerly swell with a northerly. Those two sets of conditions almost never happen together, and in October the weather is unsettled enough that one of them is happening most weekends. The pair are rarely good together and rarely bad together either, which through the summer is an academic point and in October is the plan: check the chart on Thursday, and one end of the peninsula will have your day on it.

The rest lines up behind that. The autumn lows are properly arriving, the water is still at 15°C, the school holidays are over and there is daylight until seven. Nothing about November or January improves on any of that except the size.

Learning in October

  • For learning : Good

Possible on the sheltered side with somebody watching, and no longer a month to arrive here with no experience at all.

Where a beginner goes in October

These spots are reachable all year. What the month changes is the size of the waves, not the access.

For an experienced surfer

  • Surf : Excellent

The month to plan around. Both windows open, warm-enough water, and swell that means it.

Where these figures come from

Air, rain and sunshine: WMO / NOAA 1991-2020 normals for Agadir Al Massira, a station some twenty kilometres inland and so a little warmer than the coast in summer. Swell, period and share of workable wind: Swell Archive and surf-forecast. Water temperature: seatemperature.org and weather-and-climate. Crowds and prices are an editorial judgement, not a measurement.
