Surfing in Wales in April

Surfing in Wales in April

April gives Llangennith its best figures of the year, and they are not a reason to drive here in April.

  • Water temp.
    10 °C
  • For learning
    Good
  • The month
    Very good

Conditions in April

  • Water temp. : 10 °C
  • Wetsuit : 5/4 mm, hood, gloves and boots

April is the cleanest month on the Gower and the argument for reading a number rather than obeying it. Llangennith in April is clean eight days out of thirty, blown out fourteen and too small eight, which is the best split any break on this coast produces.

Look at what it is made of. The eight clean days come from the winter storms slackening and the wind dropping, and the eight too-small days come from exactly the same thing. April is calm rather than good: the sea is tidier because there is less of everything, and the water is still at 10°C, so a clean small day still costs a hood.

That is why October and not April is the month to plan a Welsh weekend around. April is the month with the best odds of finding the sea flat and pleasant. It is worth knowing, and it is worth knowing what it is.

Learning in April

  • For learning : Good

The first month worth trying. Langland on a small day, with a school, and a suit thicker than the weather suggests.

Where a beginner goes in April

These spots are reachable all year. What the month changes is the size of the waves, not the access.

For an experienced surfer

  • Surf : Very good

Clean and small. Good for a longboard and a long look at the peninsula, not for the session you will remember.

Where these figures come from

Air, rain and sunshine: WMO / NOAA 1991-2020 normals for Agadir Al Massira, a station some twenty kilometres inland and so a little warmer than the coast in summer. Swell, period and share of workable wind: Swell Archive and surf-forecast. Water temperature: seatemperature.org and weather-and-climate. Crowds and prices are an editorial judgement, not a measurement.
