Surfing in Wales in May

Surfing in Wales in May

May is where the water finally moves, and the peninsula spends six weeks being the nicest place on this coast without many people knowing.

Conditions in May

  • Water temp. : 12 °C
  • Wetsuit : 5/4 mm, hood, gloves and boots

May is when the sea catches up with the year. It reaches 12°C, four degrees above March, and the difference between a 4/3 with a hood and a 3/2 without one is the difference between an hour and three.

The swell has not gone. Atlantic lows still cross in May and Llangennith still picks them up; what has gone is the wind that ruined them all winter, so the days that arrive tend to be usable. Between the temperature, the light until nine and the fact that nobody has started their summer yet, it is the best-value weekend of the Welsh year.

Rhossili Down and the walk out to Worm's Head are worth the drive on their own in May, which matters more here than it would elsewhere. Half the point of the Gower is that a flat weekend is still a good weekend.

Learning in May

  • For learning : Very good

A good month to start. Warm enough to stay in, small enough to stand up in, and Langland is not yet full.

Where a beginner goes in May

These spots are reachable all year. What the month changes is the size of the waves, not the access.

For an experienced surfer

  • Surf : Very good

Underrated. Swell without the winter wind, and the peninsula to yourself for another six weeks.

Where these figures come from

Air, rain and sunshine: WMO / NOAA 1991-2020 normals for Agadir Al Massira, a station some twenty kilometres inland and so a little warmer than the coast in summer. Swell, period and share of workable wind: Swell Archive and surf-forecast. Water temperature: seatemperature.org and weather-and-climate. Crowds and prices are an editorial judgement, not a measurement.
