Surfing in Wales in February

February is the coldest water Wales gets, at 7°C, and the month where the drive has to be worth it before you make it.

Conditions in February

  • Water temp. : 7 °C
  • Wetsuit : 6/5 mm, hood, gloves and boots

February keeps January's weather and takes away the reason to tolerate it. The swell is still arriving, the wind is still taking most of it, and the sea has slipped to 7°C, its floor for the year.

What that does to a weekend is arithmetic. In a 4/3 with a hood, February gives most people an hour before the cold starts making the decisions, and an hour is not much return on a four-hour round trip from Bristol or Birmingham. The people who surf the Gower in February are the ones who live near it.

There is one compensation and it is real: nobody else is there. The Llangennith car park in February holds four cars, and three miles of sand with nobody on it is a different beach from the one August knows.

Learning in February

  • For learning : Off season

No. Cold enough to end a first session before anything is learned, and the schools do not run until Easter.

Where a beginner goes in February

These spots are reachable all year. What the month changes is the size of the waves, not the access.

For an experienced surfer

  • Surf : Good

A local's month. If the drive is under an hour, February is as good as January; if it is over three, wait for April.

Where these figures come from

Air, rain and sunshine: WMO / NOAA 1991-2020 normals for Agadir Al Massira, a station some twenty kilometres inland and so a little warmer than the coast in summer. Swell, period and share of workable wind: Swell Archive and surf-forecast. Water temperature: seatemperature.org and weather-and-climate. Crowds and prices are an editorial judgement, not a measurement.
