April is the first of the two inter-monsoon months. The north-east monsoon is losing its grip, so the offshore mornings on the south coast become less reliable through the month, and the south-west monsoon that will run the east coast has not arrived.
In practice the south still works, especially early in the month and early in the day, and it works with almost nobody on it. It is also the hottest month of the Sri Lankan year, on land and in the water: 30°C, the warmest reading in this whole catalogue. If your dates are April, book the south coast and expect the second half to be quieter than the first.
